Tarot Vs. Oracle Cards for Divination: A Beginners Guide!

People are always searching for ways to predict their future with a variety of tools and techniques. The most popular method of fortune-telling has been and remains cards for centuries.

Marcolino da Forli published the first treatise on divination with playing card divination in 1540. Italy is the home of tarot, where some of its earliest tarokka decks were made.

Today, however, you can find Tarot decks in esoteric shops as well as other divination cards. These are often called oracles. This article will explain how they differ from Tarot and how to use them.

Tarot is the key for the subconscious through images

In any case, the tarot is the key that unlocks the subconscious through the use of images. Psychoanalysis and psychotherapy use techniques that are similar to fortune-telling in different directions. The human psyche’s survival mechanism for pattern recognition (responding in a split second to danger) is known as pareidolia.

This mechanism allows us to see familiar shapes, such as castles, in passing clouds. Psychotherapeutic work using metaphorical maps is based on this mechanism.

How does metaphorical associative card work? There are different numbers of cards in each set. The set “Myths”, for example, consists of 55, the set “Ekko” – of 99, the classic set “He” contains two sets of 88 cards, some of which contain the names of life situations, and the other – images of these situations. The recipient describes the card and reveals the essence. He projects the problem onto what he saw, and then describes the image in his interpretation.

What are Oracle cards?

Oracle is a deck made up of a random number of cards that are not bound to a particular structure. Some oracles have 78 cards. This is why many people mistake such decks for Tarot. In other cases, there may be 36, 40 or 58 cards.

There is no fixed framework. If the Tarot is always a clear structure – 22 Major Arcana, 16 Court cards, and 40 numerical cards, then the oracles cannot be structured according to a certain principle – they simply do not have a common system for all. Most of the time, there is some systematization within an oracle (e.g., dividing cards into specific groups), but it will always be different from the classic Tarot.

The meaning of the cards is the same. There are many Tarot decks. However, we know that the Two of Cups will always be the Two of Cups. It may not depict people, but a pair or mermaids or vampires or cooing doves. Or just a symbolic image. The map’s main essence does not change. Only semantic shades or nuances are used to add meaning.

Oracle Cards: The subjects

Tarot is a universal system that can be used to analyze any situation. It covers all phenomena. Yes, there are universal decks of oracles. However, narrowly thematic ones are also often found, for example, focused on viewing love relationships, health or business issues, or united by one topic – the oracle of flowers, animals, stones, and so on. The main topic must be well-understood in order to work with them.

For example, a person who doesn’t know the difference between linden or ash and what symbolism each tree represents will not be able interact fully with a deck that has such a theme. It will be difficult for someone new to astrology to grasp if the oracle focuses on the zodiac, or is tied to lunar days and the phases of the nightstar.

Is it easier working with Oracle or Tarot cards?

Is it easier or harder for a tarot card reader to work with Oracles? Everything depends on the oracle, its structure, subject matter and one’s understanding of the subject. Any oracle can be dealt with by someone who has studied at most five different tarot decks, and has been practicing for at minimum several years.

It can be more difficult for beginners to use narrow-themed oracles. However, simple decks that are based on easily understood symbols (e.g., the Small Deck of Lenormand) will prove to be easier to learn than the traditional Tarot. The more developed a person’s imagination, intuition, and the ability to see in each symbol not only one meaning but at least several, the more successful his work with an oracle or oracle deck will be.

What to choose – Tarot or Oracle Cards?

Oracle cards are a set of pictures and symbols that provide answers to questions. You can use them to help you understand yourself better, find out what the future holds, or deal with pressing issues.

The deck of Tarot Cards differs from the Oracle in that it is clear and has a specific order. Every detail is important.

There are many main schools to the Tarot. This is the school of the Marseille Tarot, Etteilla Tarot, Waite’s deck, Crowley’s deck. Each deck has a clear structure. It contains the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana as well as Court Cards.

Major Arcana numbers range from 0 to 21. Minor Arcana can be described as four suits. Each suit has 11 cards, from Ace to Ten. Each suit has its own set of characteristics and each one has its own qualities. Each suit of the Minor Arcana has its own “Royal Court” – King, Lady, Knight, and Page. These may include Knight, Lady Prince, Handmaiden, and Prince in some decks. This results in a deck of 78 cards. Tarot decks are based upon numerological, astrological and other knowledge systems.

Card Oracles may not be always structured. It could be a collection of affirmations, aphorisms, or symbols. Oracles “speak” to us in the language of fairies, flowers, trees, and even the “voices” of famous people.

Osho Cards – Osho Tarot Transformation and Osho Tarot Zen are an Oracle that contains the sayings of Master Osho. His students and followers created a deck to help you look deeper and gain a better understanding of yourself. It is an Oracle deck, even though it has a structure similar the Tarot.

This is an example of Tarot being used by the Oracle. But the name isn’t what is most important. Both are self-knowledge and predictive systems. Each deck can have its own focus. One will allow you to delve into yourself and meditate, the other better “works” with situations. It is important that you communicate with the world, and your subconscious mind, as well as with the Universe, as successfully and comfortably as possible.

How to read Tarot Cards

Intuitive fortune telling is the easiest method for beginners. This involves the fortuneteller relying on the name of a card and his impressions about the image. True, there is a catch – the names do not always correspond directly to the “original” meaning. The Death card, for instance, does not have any negative color and does nothing to indicate that someone will be killed. It is best to read the descriptions of the cards in the deck and then work through each one on an emotional level.

The process is simple: you ask a question, then draw one or several cards to get an answer. Now, instead of using minimalistic symbols that have a written meaning you can interpret the entire image. Although it sounds complicated, the activity can be very exciting.

Oracle cards and fortune-telling: Interpretation and rules

The deck layout is very easy. The fortuneteller will only have to choose the method of fortune-telling. Follow the instructions and then read the value. This method has the advantage that each card contains the interpretation.

You should learn the rules of Oracle cards to begin fortune-telling with them.

  • Before you can guess, mix the deck thoroughly, then divide it into two parts, and stir again.
  • Fortune-telling should be done on Friday and predictions on Monday should be avoided.
  • Oracle cards can only be reserved for one person. Only the fortuneteller is allowed to touch them.
  • You can’t guess in silence. If there is a pet cat in the house, it is better to predict her fate in her presence.

Simple fortune-telling using Oracle cards

It doesn’t take any special skill or knowledge to use Oracle cards:

  • Reshuffle the deck. Remove a card
  • draw 2 cards each until the fortuneteller’s card falls out. Retire the paired card.
  • Repeat the procedure two more times.
  • The meaning of the three cards you have dropped is explained below. The card contains the interpretation.
