Last October, we planned a family trip to Montana for the fall. It was one of the few states that is still on our list. travel bucket list that we’ve always wanted to visit. I refer to our obvious obsession with the show as “always” Yellowstone. As I wait for the new season, I’m sitting on edge with my Stetson hat.
Back to Montana – the beauty is unreal. There’s truly nothing better for your relationships than spending time together unplugged in nature, making memories that will last forever. It’s a breathtaking, new-to-us destination that was well worth the wait.
Montana: How to Get There
We flew into Missoula, were met by Paws Up Resort transportation, and taken to Greenough, Montana. Greenough is about a two-hour drive from Glacier National Park.
Where We Remain: Paws Up
We stayed at the following hotel for this trip: The Resort at Paws Up. Paws Up is a resort and cattle ranch that offers all-inclusive services. It is located in the mountains of western Montana. We originally booked a Meadow Home with two bedrooms. However, due to availability, we were upgraded into a Meadow Home with three bedrooms. Wilderness Estate.
The cabin was a complete dream with luxury features that were inspired by nature. Every day we relaxed in the hot tub on the private deck. And when the snow began to fall, it was even better. One of my favorite moments of our Montana trip was ordering pizza for a cozy movie night, roasting s’mores, and watching The Mighty Ducks as the grand finale. It was so much fun to make fires in our timber and stone fireplace.
Our 3,250 square-foot Wilderness Estate included:
- Two king-size beds, two queen-size beds, and one full sofabed
- Three master bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms
- Living room with stone fireplace
- Chef’s kitchen
- Loft game room
- Private deck with hot tub
- Wi-Fi Access
- Daily full-service housekeeping
- Lexus personal vehicle
Paws Up is ideal for couples and active families who love adventure. If you’re someone who wants to shop or dine at numerous restaurants, a city, a larger resort, or a location closer to a town might be a better option.
What We Did in Montanta
Paws Up guests had the privilege of using a Lexus SUV and spent hours exploring the 37,000-acre property looking for wildlife and taking photos of bighorn sheep and elk.
The girls had a great time, playing in the fresh air, exploring the woods looking for sticks to build their teepees, while we rocked out on the front porch sipping our coffee. Okay – I rocked; it didn’t take long for Zach to offer his expertise and assistance to the teepee construction.
There are so many resort activities you can choose from that you can live your life as slow or fast as you wish. Zach did plan several excursions for the two of us while the girls enjoyed the kid’s adventure club (more on this below). The Paws Up was unfortunately cancelled. outdoor spaThe season had ended, but the staff was wonderful and we enjoyed our morning session in the facility. Morris Ranch House.
The RZR ExperienceTour was fun, but the absolute highlight was fly fishingon the Blackfoot River. No, I’m not kidding. If you don’t know, Zach is an avid hunter and I’d rather peel off my toenails than crouch in a deer stand. The perfect mixture of methodical activity and relaxation was required to learn how to fish. This is also what made it so exciting when you reel in your catch. Even though the temperature was a balmy 12 degrees, and even though I should’ve packed a warm thermos drink and longer coat to defrost my backside, it was a perfect half-day of spectacular sights. Our boat guide’s positive energy was contagious, and we caught several beautiful trout and cutthroats which were all released back into their natural habitat.
Where We Eaten
Paws Up Resort is an all-inclusive resort. We grabbed breakfast to go at Paws Up. TroughOr, you could have it delivered directly to your cabin. We usually ate lunch at TankThey also had delicious soups, sandwiches, and salads. Dinner at PompWe ate there twice. Pomp was the perfect place to be, with its roaring fire, and a menu that included wild game and Western comfort foods.
There’s no market on the property but Paws Up will deliver groceries. Had I known better, I would’ve requested snacks, drinks, and breakfast items to have on hand prior to our arrival. I recommend you take advantage of the grill and eat a few meals in your cabin, if you plan on staying for more than a few nights.
Fun for the Kids
The Kids Corp of DiscoveryIt is a half-day or full day immersive program that is tailored specifically for the Little Discoverers (ages 5-12) and the Adventure Club (7-12). The Paws Up staff was amazing throughout the entire trip. After learning about nature and trying out rustic skills at the ranch, our two wild ones were exhausted. They also did fun crafts such as pumpkin carving. The ice cream was a huge hit with the two wild ones, who ate at a resort restaurant. After-hours babysitting and nanny services are also available.
Although we love to have the girls along, they were too young to really experience the resort in the season that we went. If I could go back, I would travel to Montana in September or August when there are more activities for younger children. They can now join in on the fun, as they are both six years old. Here we go, Cooper family fly fishing
